With its strategic location — near some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes — Djibouti exists simultaneously at the center of global geopolitics and the corner of the world’s eye.

With more than 338 million US-taxpayer dollars having been misused by a corrupt, autocratic regime, it is TIME we claimed Djibouti as one of our own: a true democracy that guarantees its citizens peace, prosperity, and progress.
