In a disturbing display of intolerance toward freedom of expression, the Republic of Djibouti has witnessed further violations of women’s rights. After the unjust arrest and detention of Yasmine Ahmed Guedi for a Facebook post on May 16,2023, three other women now find themselves imprisoned for exercising rights of expression through art during a parody parade on the national holiday of June 27, 2023.
The three women, Amran Djama Ahmed, Asma Kamil Houssein, and Habone Mahamoud Hamed, members of the opposition political party ‘’RADDE’’ (Democratic Action and Ecological Development), have been held in arbitrary detention since almost ten days ago, first in the 4th arrondissement and, since Thursday, July 6, 2023, in the sinister Gabode prison.
The latest incident is yet another glaring instance of the Djiboutian government’s blatant disregard for women’s rights and their freedom. The RADDE strongly condemns the detention and demands the immediate and unconditional release of the women.
The RADDE also urges the Djiboutian government to respect women’s rights, especially their freedom of expression. Women play a vital role in our society, illuminating our homes and communities, and they must be allowed to express themselves without fear of persecution.
